Magine Pro Nominated for Streaming Media Innovation Award
We’re honoured to have been nominated for the Streaming Media European Innovation Awards 2024!
The Magine Pro OTT Platform is in the running for the OTT Video Platform/Service category in this prestigious competition.
An OTT Platform UX that helps niche content providers thrive
The nomination recognizes the platform’s ability to support niche content providers in going direct to consumers with a video streaming service that matches up to the user experience offered by their giant rivals like Netflix and Disney+.
Minimising migration mayhem – three weeks to launch!
Over the past year, Magine Pro has significantly optimised its platform, focusing on enabling smooth, quick, and seamless migration for these customers, to ensure that the transition is as non-disruptive as possible. This is achieved through expert support, proven processes, and our highly configurable application code base.
The efficacy of these enhancements in product and processes was evident when Magine Pro recently migrated one customer, a niche SVOD service based in South America, off their existing platform provider and onto the Magine Pro OTT platform in a little over three weeks from start to finish. This migration included the creation of Smart TV apps for both LG and Samsung devices, both of which were submitted to the relevant app stores for approval within three weeks of the contract signature.
Future-proofing OTT services with Magine Pro’s OTT Platform
One of the key reasons why OTT services choose to migrate to Magine Pro is its advanced hybrid monetisation capabilities, which adeptly cater to diverse revenue generation strategies within the same service framework. This flexibility allows service providers to offer a blend of AVOD, SVOD, TVOD, and even bespoke models like electronic sell-through, all managed through a single interface. This not only simplifies the backend operations but also enhances the consumer experience by providing varied content consumption options. By integrating leading payment gateways and supporting multiple currencies, Magine Pro ensures a frictionless payment experience for end-users globally, crucial for customer retention and acquisition in a competitive market.
Vote for Magine Pro in the Streaming Media Innovation Awards
The final shortlist for these awards is determined by public vote. You can vote for Magine Pro until 24th July 2024 here: https://www.streamingmediaglobal.com/Innovation-Awards
The winners will be announced in September.

Curating Fear: Olle Agebro Talks Splatter’s Unique Place in the Streaming World
In an exclusive interview, Olle Agebro, the visionary founder of Splatter, delves into the inspiration and strategy behind his horror-focused streaming service. From his passion for niche genres to the intricacies of curating a diverse collection of horror films, Olle shares his insights on what makes Splatter a unique platform for horror enthusiasts.
What inspired you to create a service dedicated exclusively to horror content?
Horror is one of those genres that have a really engaged community, that is often neglected by the mainstream platforms. Though horror hasn’t been a major genre in my previous projects, talking to audiences with a passion for genre films has convinced me that this is a underserved community that would really love a platform made only for them. Horror might be the most obvious genre, but I’m quite sure that there’s an opportunity for other platforms to reach niche audiences with a similar strategy.
Horror is a diverse genre with many subgenres. How do you curate and categorise the horror content on Splatter to cater to a wide range of horror enthusiasts?
Curation always starts with yourself and your own passion. Personally, I really love elevated horror and Italian Giallo films from the 60’s and 70’s, but it’s also really important to learn to know your audiences. I really like to present and categorise films in ways that might not be obvious to the audience, not only through genres and subgenres but also by trying to curate films in a way that gives the audience new context and perspective. Being a part of the community, hosting events, and participating in forums and Facebook groups, has really given me a better understanding of what the audience is looking for and what’s missing from other platforms.
Can you share some insights into the demographics of your audience?
You might think this would be a platform for 30-45-year-old men, but genre film fans are a surprisingly diverse audience. We’ve got teenagers as well as old ladies among our subscribers. It’s also really fun to learn what films they like the most, I was surprised to see that our classics – films that most of our audience has probably already seen – are among the most watched on the platform.
Original content is increasingly becoming a competitive advantage for streaming platforms. What’s your strategy for producing or acquiring exclusive horror content that sets Splatter apart from others?
The great thing about serving an audience that no one else really cares about is that exclusive films are quite easy to find, simply because the mainstream platforms are not interested in those genres. We won’t look into producing exclusive content in the near future, though by establishing distribution partnerships with similar platforms around the world I think we have a great opportunity to acquire exclusive content that our audience really loves.
With the rise of other streaming services and the competitive landscape, what is your long-term strategy for maintaining and growing your subscriber base in the horror niche?
Our main goal is to simply give our audience films that they cannot find anywhere else, and maintain our focus on this audience. I think the streaming landscape is hugely competitive for the mainstream platforms, but at the same time, there is really no competition at all for niche audiences. If audiences are willing to subscribe to 3-5 services simultaneously I think a few of those will most likely be mainstream platforms, but many subscribers will keep looking for a niche platform to superserve their interests.
Can you share any upcoming or exciting developments or releases that horror fans can look forward to on Splatter in the near future?
We recently released the Canadian lo-fi horror hit Skinamarink – it’s one of those films that really went viral but yet was not seen by a huge audience. I think our audience will really love it.

The OTT Billing Blueprint: 5 Tactics to Boost Revenue and Retention
Mastering effective billing strategies is crucial to boost OTT revenue and retention. As consumer preferences and market dynamics continue to shift, OTT providers must adapt their billing approaches to meet evolving demands and maximise revenue potential.
One of the primary challenges facing OTT platforms is maintaining a balance between generating revenue and retaining subscribers. Effective billing strategies play a central role in achieving this balance by offering flexible options that cater to diverse user preferences while ensuring sustainable monetisation.
Here are our five top tips for mastering effective billing strategies for OTT platforms:
- Understand Your Audience: Analyse user data to gain insights into subscriber preferences and payment habits. Tailor your billing models to align with user expectations, driving higher conversion rates and reducing churn.
- Offer Multiple Payment Options: Provide a variety of payment methods to accommodate diverse user preferences and geographical considerations. A seamless and convenient payment experience enhances customer satisfaction and retention.
- Implement Dynamic Pricing Strategies: Leverage data analytics and machine learning algorithms to segment users into different pricing tiers based on behaviour and consumption patterns. Offer personalised pricing plans tailored to individual preferences and usage levels to increase subscription upgrades and maximise revenue.
- Maintain Transparent Billing Practices: Clearly communicate subscription fees, billing cycles, and any additional charges to build trust and confidence among subscribers. Offer flexible billing options such as monthly, yearly, or pay-per-view plans to empower users to choose the option that best suits their needs.
- Focus on Customer Experience: Prioritise a user-friendly billing experience by providing intuitive billing interfaces, easy-to-understand billing statements, and responsive customer support. Enhancing the overall customer experience fosters satisfaction and loyalty, driving long-term success for your OTT platform.
Mastering effective billing strategies is essential for OTT platforms looking to thrive in today’s competitive landscape. By understanding your audience, offering multiple payment options, implementing dynamic pricing strategies, maintaining transparent billing practices, and focusing on customer experience, you can optimise revenue generation, reduce churn, and ensure long-term success.

Innovation Stations! Magine Pro Hack Days Focus on OTT AI Technologies
Magine Pro recently challenged its brilliant team of people to come together in cross-functional teams and create something new for our platform in a series of Hack Days on the theme of OTT AI. In this blog, Hayley Barnes reflects on the amazing creativity and teamwork shown, and how it underlines our commitment to innovation.
Artificial Intelligence is, without doubt, the buzzword of the decade for a whole host of industries, including Media and Entertainment. But many companies are still struggling to see how AI can actually advance their goals, rather than being just a gimmick.
That’s why we gave our teams a specific AI-based challenge for this year’s Magine Pro Hack Days. We knew our fantastic team of specialists would come up with some amazing suggestions of how AI could enhance our OTT platform and, crucially, improve the viewing experience and encourage engagement from end consumers, because that’s what our customers, the video service providers, really care about. And we were right!
The Magine Pro team enjoying the Hack Days presentations
OTT Innovation in action
In total, nine fantastic proof of concepts came to life, each showcasing the creativity and technical prowess of our teams. The diversity of projects was really inspiring and demonstrated the flexibility of the Magine Pro OTT platform.
We had two joint winners: The first implemented AI from Amazon Transcribe to automatically add subtitles to VOD content. They shared the honors with the cleverly named “TrivAI” which used OpenAI’s APIs to generate a trivia quiz based on VOD content to encourage viewer engagement.
Promoting an accessible and consistent OTT user experience with subtitles
The team behind the subtitling project found a speedy way to trigger not only the transcription of speech from the VOD files, but also the conversion to SRT file types that could then be uploaded to the relevant Magine Pro workflow for automatic display in the end-user’s video player. This would be a huge benefit for OTT services that currently disappoint viewers with only patchy subtitling coverage.
For the lowdown on this project, I spoke to Streaming Software Engineer, Catuxa Seoane Botana who was taking part in her first Magine Pro Hack Days after joining us almost a year ago. “The biggest challenge was taking the words and timestamps output by the AI and turning them into sentences with correct punctuation,” Catuxa told me. “The breakthrough moment when we successfully created an SRT file from an MP4 video was very exciting.”
One key criteria for the team was that they wanted to create something seamless that built on the existing functions of our OTT platform. “Our focus was on creating a streamlined, automatic solution,” explained Catuxa, “That was one of the drivers behind our choice of Amazon Transcribe as our AI solution for the project. But we’re already thinking about further possibilities, including using Amazon Translate to automatically generate subtitles in multiple languages – because the more choice offered to viewers, the better!”
Some of the code written for the subtitling solution
Increasing OTT engagement is not a trivial matter
So what about TrivAI? This project was centered on the concept that gamification can keep users interacting with a service longer, as well as presenting a fun way to introduce users to new content that they may like to watch, both key goals for any OTT service. You’ll see from the screenshots below that the proof of concept interface included links to the trailer and also the options to add/remove the VOD content the quiz is based on to your watchlist. TrivAI team consisted of: Rami Baarah (Web Lead Engineer), David Wong (Senior Software Engineer), Saima Iftikhar (QA) & Joel Kenne-Forsberg (Product Owner)
The spokesmen for the TrivAI team was Web Lead Engineer, Rami Baarah. “The way the Magine Pro TV app is built allows us to rapidly add features and test them on actual devices,” Rami told me. “When you pair that with our flexible backend, we could really focus as a team on making the trivia game as much fun as possible, rather than fighting with the code. Once we were having fun playing the game, we knew we’d cracked it!”
But is the trivia idea just another AI gimmick? Rami doesn’t think so: “It would allow end users to explore content in a fresh way,” he believes. “It will either help them to find new things to watch, or revisiting old favourites in a fun new way. And for the OTT platforms, it’s an engaging way to retain customer attention and provide them with entertainment – which is, in the end, what their business is!”

Hack Days are fun, with a serious purpose
Our Hack Days not only demonstrate Magine Pro’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology but also underline our collective ability to translate ideas into tangible solutions. On a deeper level, they serve to empower our team, providing them with the opportunity to explore their passions, experiment with cutting-edge technologies, and showcase their capabilities in a supportive environment.
As Rami puts it: “It’s great to work with my regular team but also with other colleagues from across the company. It’s the spirit and energy you see in others that makes you feel confident in delivering in your day job as well as the Hack Days.”
We’re so proud of this culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning that makes Magine Pro such a great place to work.
Stay tuned for some of these great projects featuring in coming releases of our OTT platform.

Mastering the Mix: How to Harness the Power of Hybrid Monetisation for OTT
In the dynamic landscape of streaming services, the adoption of hybrid monetisation models is reshaping the industry’s approach to revenue generation. Unlike traditional models, hybrid strategies seamlessly integrate subscription, transactional, and advertising elements, offering a versatile and adaptive solution for both providers and consumers.
For consumers, hybrid models translate into a more dynamic and engaging viewing experience. The mix of subscription content, exclusive purchases, and targeted advertisements creates a diverse content ecosystem. Viewers can explore a wide range of offerings, discovering new content while enjoying the benefits of their chosen monetisation model.
For providers, hybrid enables them to experiment with different models to find the optimal mix that suits their content, audience, and market conditions. This flexibility enables them to adapt to changing trends and consumer behaviour, reducing the risks associated with a rigid, single-tier approach. To ensure the successful implementation of a hybrid monetisation model, a robust strategy is essential. Here’s our perspective on the key priorities that providers should focus on to fully benefit from a hybrid approach.
Making Hybrid Monetisation Work: What’s Needed
- User-Centric Approach: Understanding user preferences and behaviour is crucial. Service providers must tailor their hybrid models based on audience demographics, consumption patterns, and market trends to ensure maximum effectiveness.
- Seamless Integration: The success of hybrid monetisation hinges on the seamless integration of subscription, transactional, and advertising components. A well-designed user interface and clear communication about the different offerings create a positive user experience.
- Data-Driven Decision Making: Leveraging data analytics is essential for optimizing hybrid models. Analysing user data helps providers identify trends, preferences, and areas for improvement, enabling them to refine their strategies and content offerings.
Achieving Success with Hybrid Monetisation
- Strategic Content Curation: Offering a diverse range of content that caters to different user segments is key. This includes a mix of subscription-based, transactional, and ad-supported content, ensuring there’s something for everyone.
- Innovative Marketing Campaigns: Providers should implement creative marketing campaigns highlighting their hybrid model’s benefits. This could include promotions, exclusive previews, and limited-time offers to entice both existing and potential subscribers.
- User Education: Communicating the advantages of the hybrid model to users is crucial. Service providers should educate their audience on the value of each monetisation element and how it contributes to an enriched streaming experience.
The rise of hybrid monetisation models marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of streaming services. By combining the strengths of subscriptions, transactions, and advertising, both service providers and consumers stand to benefit. Providers can better navigate market fluctuations and economic uncertainties with greater resilience, as viewers benefit from a more personalised and adaptable streaming experience.

The Evolution of SVOD: Unleashing Potential Through Hybrid Monetisation Models
Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD) has become synonymous with the way we consume content today. However, the SVOD landscape is now experiencing a significant transformation, marked by the widespread adoption of hybrid monetisation models. Unlike traditional single-tier approaches, hybrid models seamlessly combine subscription-based revenue streams with transactional and advertising elements, offering a more dynamic and adaptable strategy that offers new possibilities for both service providers and viewers.
The Power of Hybrid Monetisation:
Hybrid monetisation models leverage the strengths of diverse revenue streams, providing service providers with more flexibility. Subscription revenues offer stability, while transactional elements cater to one-time users or those seeking premium content. Simultaneously, advertising opens avenues for broader audience reach, making it an all-encompassing approach that maximises revenue potential.
The Benefits of Hybrid Monetisation:
- Diversified Revenue Streams: One of the key advantages of hybrid models is the creation of multiple revenue streams. By combining subscriptions, transactions, and advertising, service providers can establish a more robust financial foundation, reducing dependence on a single source of income.
- Enhanced User Engagement: Hybrid models cater to a diverse audience by providing options for both subscription-based and transactional content. This flexibility encourages users to engage with the platform in various ways, ensuring a more personalized and satisfying experience.
- Access to Exclusive Content: Transactional elements within hybrid models allow for the sale of premium or exclusive content on top of the basic subscription offering. This strategy not only attracts users seeking exclusive material but also provides an additional revenue avenue for service providers.
- Wider Audience Reach: The inclusion of advertising components enables SVOD platforms to reach a broader audience, including those who might be hesitant to subscribe. This expanded reach enhances brand visibility and can convert free-tier users into paying subscribers over time.
How SVOD Anchors Hybrid
In a well-crafted hybrid monetisation strategy, SVOD often assumes a central role as the anchor. Subscribers can enjoy the richness of video-on-demand (VOD) content within a subscription and also capitalise on the flexibility of the hybrid model. This approach allows users to make one-time purchases for exclusive content or opt for a free environment supported by targeted ads. As the long-standing preferred model for service providers, SVOD continues to play a pivotal role in hybrid strategies. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to foster sustained viewer loyalty through the convenience, personalisation, and high-quality offerings inherent in a subscription-based streaming service.
Forging Ahead with Hybrid Monetisation
Hybrid monetisation models unlock a spectrum of possibilities for streaming services. Through the deliberate integration of subscriptions, transactions, and advertising, service providers gain the ability to diversify revenue streams and navigate the challenges associated with financial fluctuations. Beyond financial benefits, the hybrid approach also promises viewers a more dynamic and personalised streaming experience. The future of SVOD is undoubtedly being shaped by the innovative fusion of monetisation strategies, offering mutual advantages for both providers and consumers.
